INTRODUCTION TO EE

The extended essay is one of the main core aspects of the IB curriculum. Its aim is to get people to delve deeper into a subject they are interested in and develop the writing skills for a longer paper. It is a beneficial skill for university for the people interested in getting a degree. This is an independent piece of work of 4000 words. This is one of the mandatory parts of the diploma program.

The essay titles shouldn’t be too broad but should still allow for a development of ideas and deep exploration. All subject areas have different requirements. For example, science EE’s typically involve an experiment where the results will have to be thoroughly considered and interpreted. For English extended essays, questions such as ‘how does the pscyhoanalysis of a certain character in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice give insight into her actions?’ would allow the student to study literary techniques and then discuss and interpret how this impacts the plot and understanding of the book. Additionally, it could also be linked to psychology and become an interdisciplinary essay (world studies), dependingon how suitable this is to your area of interest.

The essays are graded on a scale from A-E. A grade D is required in order to obtain the diploma. Together with TOK it is decided how many core points the student gets. The range for this is 3-0, the points matrix can be viewed under the TOK syllabus changes 2020/2021
